Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon Becomes Only Ugandan Marathon Certified by World Athletics Federation

The Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon proudly announces its certification by the esteemed World Athletics Federation (WAF). This certification, obtained after a meticulous assessment process on March 23rd, 2024, in Kasese, rigorously evaluates various aspects of the marathon route, ensuring it meets the highest global standards.

World Athletics is the global governing body for athletics which oversees various disciplines including track and field, cross country running, road running, race walking, mountain running, and ultra running.

The marathon’s certification was confirmed following a thorough assessment process led by Gavin Wright, an official from World Athletics. Wright, who is one of just three top-tier (Grade A) World Athletics route measurers in Africa, concluded the measuring and evaluating of the route for the marathon in Kasese on Sunday, March 24th.

The certification of the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon by the World Athletics Federation is a momentous achievement, as it places the event among an elite group of certified marathons worldwide. This recognition allows elite athletes to compete on a globally recognized course, making any times made on the course recognized for entry into global races like the Olympics and even record books.

Notably, the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon is now the only Ugandan-run event certified by the World Athletics Federation. This achievement shows the commitment of the organizers to build a world-class marathon that puts Uganda on the international stage.

The 2024 Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon, slated for August 24th in Kasese, promises an exhilarating experience for participants of all levels. Featuring four categories – 42km, 21km, 10km, and 5km – the marathon offers something for everyone, promoting healthy lifestyles, community engagement and a field for proving athletic excellence.

Despite being only two years old, the Tusker Lite Mt Rwenzori Marathon has significantly boosted tourism in the Kasese region. Through its scenic route and immersive cultural experiences, the marathon showcases the Rwenzori region's natural beauty and rich heritage.

According to a Makerere University's Tourism Research & Development Centre study conducted last year, the marathon injected UGX 3.5 billion into Kasese's economy during the September weekend in 2023. 30% of our runners visited Kasese for the first time for the marathon.

Registration for this year's marathon is now open, with early bird tickets available for East African citizens and residents at 50,000 UGX and international runners at 50 USD. Don't miss this opportunity to be part of a world-class event that celebrates athleticism, community spirit, and the beauty of the Rwenzori region.
