Ugandan athletics is making waves internationally, thanks to stars like Victor Kiplangat, Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo & Peruth Chemutai. As races like our Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon gain popularity back home, it's vital to understand their economic impact.

Marathons are more than just races; they're catalysts for community and economic growth. It's time to quantify that change! Thank you to Makerere University's Tourism Research & Development Centre who researched our marathon's effects on our district Kasese during our second year.

Here are the highlights of s study.

A warm shoutout to the 75% who chose the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon as their first marathon!  We're also thrilled to see such diverse participation: A mix of age, gender & regions from across Uganda – & the world.  You fuel our commitment to make each year better than the last.

We are also proud to announce that the marathon has injected UGX 3.5 billion into Kasese's economy. 30% of our runners visited Kasese for the first time for the marathon. This is what happens when sports and community come together.

Most participants of the marathon travelled solo, with 57% arriving by public transport or cars. During their stay, runners preferred boda bodas (32%) and private cars (31%) for travel, and opted for hotels & guest houses. On average people spent approx. UGX 300,000 in Kasese.

Before September, 81% of accommodations had less than 40% occupancy, which soared to more than 60% during the event. 55% saw a high spike in revenue. Local businesses grew (39% moderately & 29% significantly), sparking plans for expansion & training for even greater benefits next year.

95% of participants are eager to return for the next marathon, and 93% of our marathoners would recommend the marathon to friends and family. 😍🥰 This overwhelming endorsement is a huge motivator for us to make the next event even more memorable!

The numbers don't lie - the marathon is really making a difference in Kasese.  We're looking forward to seeing even more positive changes in the future as the marathon grows!

See you all in Kasese on August 24th, 2024.
